Tottenham sporting director news: De Zerbi pushes Ausilio

by Alex Matthews

Tottenham sporting director news is moving this week, with TEAMtalk reporting that Roberto De Zerbi is pushing for the club to appoint former Inter Milan sporting director Piero Ausilio. Nothing has been agreed, and Spurs have not commented. The story rests on a report in Il Giornale, passed on by Calciomercato, that TEAMtalk’s Rob McCarthy picked up on Thursday morning.

Tottenham sporting director news: what is reported

According to TEAMtalk, Il Giornale says a move to north London is “still possible” for the 54-year-old. The report adds that Spurs chiefs are “evaluating the idea” and that Ausilio’s future “could indeed lie in England”. TEAMtalk says De Zerbi has a “very positive opinion” of Ausilio’s skills and is leading the push to bring his fellow Italian to the club. Talk of discussions between Tottenham and Ausilio has been going around, the site says, and it has grown louder this week.

TEAMtalk says Ausilio spent more than ten years at Inter in different roles and left San Siro after the two sides could not agree a new deal. It reports he had always signed one-year contracts and wanted more money, so he is now free to take another job. At Inter he worked with Beppe Marotta, and the club won three Serie A titles in the last six years.

Tottenham sporting director news: who runs recruitment now

TEAMtalk says Johan Lange and Vinai Venkatesham have led recruitment since Fabio Paratici left to take a similar role at Fiorentina. The site adds that Tottenham are expected to be active again in January, though not on the scale of a summer in which they spent more than £300million. A new striker is at the top of De Zerbi’s list, it says, and the club are still trying to move Richarlison on.

Our own January coverage looks at the striker search. De Zerbi’s thinking on team selection is in our report on spirit and Kulusevski’s return, and the 3-1 win over Coventry is the result that took pressure off the head coach, according to TEAMtalk.
