Spurs beat Coventry 3-1: Maddison, Marmoush and Davies end the wait for a first league win

by Alex Matthews

Spurs beat Coventry 3-1 at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium on Monday night to claim their first Premier League win of the season. Goals from James Maddison, Omar Marmoush and Ben Davies lifted Roberto De Zerbi’s side to 16th, according to the official club report. They had started the night at the foot of the table after six league games without a win.

Maddison helps Spurs beat Coventry

Maddison made his first start since 1 May 2025, and he did it against his home-town club. Mohammed Kudus got past Jay Dasilva down the right and laid the ball off, and Maddison hit a first-time curler from 22 yards that looped over Carl Rushworth into the top corner in the 14th minute. It was the first league goal Spurs had scored in the first half of a game this season.

However, Spurs could not add to it before the break, even though they would go on to beat Coventry. Dominic Solanke fired over, and Micky van de Ven made a last-ditch tackle to stop Brandon Thomas-Asante. Jack Rudoni then levelled five minutes after the restart. His first effort struck his team-mate Thomas-Asante and bounced back to him, and his second beat Antonin Kinsky at the near post.

How Spurs beat Coventry late on

Spurs responded well. Sandro Tonali sent two fierce shots just over the crossbar, and then Marmoush shrugged off Milan van Ewijk and curled a right-footed finish past Rushworth in the 59th minute. It was his first goal for the club, on his seventh appearance. Eight minutes of stoppage time made for a nervy finish, but Davies sealed the points in the 96th minute. Solanke laid the ball into his path, and his low left-footed shot bounced over Rushworth’s outstretched arm.

Kulusevski returns

The biggest cheer of the night, as Spurs beat Coventry, came three minutes from time, when Dejan Kulusevski replaced Kudus. He had been out for 17 months, and the crowd gave him a warm welcome on his first competitive touch in 526 days. We covered his return in our injury update before the game. Tosin Adarabioyo also made his first league start for the club, in one of five changes from the side that started at Old Trafford.

Udogie absence explained

Destiny Udogie missed the game as Spurs beat Coventry, as a precaution after a knee problem in the draw with Manchester United on Saturday. “We didn’t take a risk alongside the medical staff,” De Zerbi said, according to the club’s update.

What it means

Spurs beat Coventry to end a run of six league games without a win and climb out of the bottom of the table. Three goals, three points and Kulusevski’s return make for a better mood around the club. Our match preview had the build-up.
