Chelsea 0-2 Tottenham: Tel seals Spurs derby win

by Alex Matthews

Chelsea 0-2 Tottenham gave Roberto De Zerbi’s side a derby win at Stamford Bridge, with Mathys Tel adding a late second after Mike Penders’ own goal broke the deadlock. Cole Palmer’s second-yellow dismissal came between the goals as Spurs turned a goalless match into a clear result in the closing stages.

Both beIN Sports’ completed match account and TNT Sports’ full-time commentary record the 2-0 result. The victory followed a performance that NBC Sports’ pitchside coverage described as the stronger of the two sides in the first half, though Spurs had to wait until the 77th minute to lead.

Chelsea 0-2 Tottenham: Tel takes his starting chance

De Zerbi made two changes from the side that started against Coventry City. Mateus Fernandes and Tel came into the team, while Tosin Adarabioyo missed out and Dominic Solanke began among the substitutes, according to the club’s confirmed line-ups.

Tel was involved on the left as Spurs sought an opening before half-time. Omar Marmoush had a clear chance saved by Penders, while Kinsky made saves for Tottenham in a game that reached the interval without a goal.

Before kick-off, De Zerbi had explained Solanke’s place on the bench as a response to fatigue after Monday’s full 90 minutes against Coventry. He left open the possibility of using the striker later, and Solanke did come on in the second half. That explanation was about managing a starting decision, not a new post-match injury diagnosis.

Chelsea 0-2 Tottenham: own goal opens the way

The breakthrough came from a corner in the 77th minute. Penders attempted to punch the delivery clear but sent it backwards into his own net, putting Spurs ahead.

Chelsea’s position worsened three minutes later when Palmer fouled Conor Gallagher and received a second yellow card. He had already been cautioned during the earlier confrontation involving Fernandes.

Tel supplied the finishing touch in the 87th minute, coming in from the left and striking low into the corner. It gave Spurs breathing room for the closing stages and rewarded the forward’s return to the starting side.

Maddison forced off as Spurs secure the win

The evening also brought a fitness concern. James Maddison went down early in the second half and was replaced by Gallagher in the 51st minute, according to the broadcaster accounts.

Those reports establish that he could not continue, not the nature or length of any injury. Before the game, De Zerbi had spoken cautiously about Maddison’s readiness. A prognosis now requires a fresh, verified medical or club update rather than a guess from the substitution.

Pedro Porro and Dejan Kulusevski also appeared from the bench after being named in the squad. Their involvement followed the pre-match team-news update and the earlier assessment of Porro’s fitness.

For Spurs, the result is the immediate reward: a clean sheet, a late Tel goal and three points away to Chelsea. The Maddison assessment remains a separate question.
