Tottenham expected to put striker search at heart of January plans

by Alex Matthews

Tottenham are expected to make a striker a priority when the winter window opens, according to sources who spoke to Flashscore. The Tottenham January transfer plans reflect a feeling within the club that the squad needs extra firepower behind Dominic Solanke. Recruitment staff are already assessing their options.

Spurs plans centre on the number nine

The reported thinking is as much about reliability as quality. Solanke played his first full 90 minutes in the Premier League this season against Manchester United and scored a late equaliser. That was a positive step, but it does not settle the Tottenham January transfer question. However, Flashscore’s Dean Jones reports that Spurs still need to learn whether he can lead the line week in, week out. The striker has a chance to build momentum when Tottenham face Coventry City tonight (8pm kick-off), as our Solanke fan guide for the Coventry game explains.

For example, names are already circulating. Flashscore have previously reported that Tottenham are among the clubs looking at Club Brugge striker Nicolo Tresoldi. Sources now say a striker search sits at the heart of the Tottenham January transfer planning. A deal for a player who can make an instant impact is unlikely to come cheap. Because of that, the cost will shape how much other business the club can do in the same window.

Tottenham January transfer spending shapes the rest of the window

That balancing act matters elsewhere in the squad. Right-back cover is also under consideration. Spending heavily up front would limit the chance to chase another major midfield signing. Spurs spent big last summer, so the next moves need to target the positions where reinforcements matter most. On the current evidence, the club’s recruitment team appear to have decided that the search starts with the number nine.
